Breakthroughs in Cellular Therapies Offer New Hope for Treating Autoimmune Diseases in Los Angeles

A recent review of the current scientific evidence highlights the potential benefits of cellular therapies, including stem cell therapy, for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as lupus. Despite the availability of various treatments, a significant number of patients with autoimmune diseases do not respond or have limited response to current therapies.

Cellular therapies, which involve the use of living cells to repair or replace damaged tissues, offer a novel approach to treating autoimmune diseases. Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplants have already shown proven efficacy in treating scleroderma and multiple sclerosis. Newer cellular therapies, such as allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), chimeric antigen receptor T cells, and Treg cells, are also being explored for their potential in treating autoimmune diseases.

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs) Show Promise in Treating Lupus

A newly published study reviewing the current evidence on the safety and efficacy of MSCs for the treatment of lupus highlights the potential benefits of this type of stem cell therapy. The majority of studies completed to date in mice have reported improvement in kidney disease and life expectancy both before and after the development of lupus nephritis. Early clinical trials have also found that people with refractory lupus respond well to MSC therapy, with some people going into clinical remission and others seeing significant disease improvement.

The Future of Cellular Therapies for Autoimmune Diseases

While the results of these studies are promising, more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and limitations of cellular therapies for autoimmune diseases. The Lupus Foundation of America’s (LFA’s) research awardee, Gary S. Gilkeson, MD, is leading the charge in this area, with a current Phase II placebo-controlled multicenter trial of MSCs in refractory lupus. The LFA is committed to funding research that explores the potential of cellular therapies for the treatment of lupus and other autoimmune diseases.

Cellular therapies, including stem cell therapy, offer a new and promising approach to treating autoimmune diseases such as lupus. While more research is needed, the current evidence suggests that MSCs may be a valuable treatment option for people with refractory lupus. As research in this area continues to evolve, we may see the development of new and more effective treatments for autoimmune diseases.
