If you go to a traditional Los Angeles doctor’s office, there is often only one solution for ED—PDE-5 inhibitors. However, what about the men who are not responsive to PDE-5 inhibitors? A number of men, particularly in subgroups of patients who have other health difficulties, need to seek alternative ways to treat the underlying problems that lead to ED.

How Many Men Are Affected?

PDE-5 inhibitors can be very effective for some men. Currently, the oral medications on the market are:

  • Sildenafil (Viagra™)
  • Vardenafil (Levitra™, Staxyn™)
  • Tadalafil (Cialis™)
  • Avanafil (Stendra™)

However, they do not work by treating the underlying problem behind ED. Instead, they are designed to address the symptoms temporarily. A whopping 30-35% of men do not respond to traditional ED treatments and PDE-5 inhibitors at all. Beyond that, 70% of men who are prescribed these medications choose not to renew the prescription after 6-12 months.

Why Are Some Men Not Responsive or Ineligible?

Studies have shown that some men may not experience effective relief from their ED while taking PDE-5 inhibitors, especially if they’ve been treated for prostate cancer or have diabetes. For men taking nitrates for an underlying condition, these oral medications can be dangerous, meaning they’re completely ineligible for this treatment option.

What other conditions prevent patients from taking these medications?

  • Heart problems (chest pain, heart failure or irregular heartbeat)
  • History of stroke or heart attack
  • Diabetes
  • Liver or kidney issues
  • Hypertension or hypotension
  • Blood cell irregularities (sickle cell anemia, leukemia, etc.)
  • Retinitis pigmentosa

What Alternatives Are Out There?

At our Los Angeles area office, we work with men who are unable to take PDE-5 inhibitors, or who have taken them and not experienced positive results. Through our effective combination of extracorporeal shockwave therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell injections, we can treat many men who are otherwise deemed “untreatable” with no pain, downtime or uncomfortable side effects. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is non-invasive and provides a long-term solution for ED. Depending on the severity of your ED, PRP and stem cell therapy can be integrated into your treatment plan for higher impact results. By healing the tissue affected and not merely putting a band-aid over the problem, men who are not responsive to PDE-5 inhibitors can experience satisfaction again.
