1. A Meta-analysis On Evidence of Platelet-rich Plasma for Androgenetic Alopecia

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment has gained popularity among different surgical specialities for improving various conditions. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common disorder, with possible psychosocial implications. Plastic surgeons have increased the practice of PRP injections for hair restoration. A meta-analysis on this topic was performed comparing local injection of PRP versus control to investigate the efficacy of local PRP injections in AGA. The researchers performed a systematic literature search. The increase in number of hairs was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes were the increase of hair thickness and the percentage increase in hair number and thickness. Results from the study shows that local injection of PRP for androgenic alopecia might be associated with an increased number of hairs in the treated areas with minimal morbidity. 2. Study of platelet-rich plasma injections in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia through an one-year period

Maria-Angeliki Gkini1,

Background: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is defined as an autologous concentration of plasma with a greater count of platelets than that of whole blood. Its action depends on the released growth factors from platelets. It has been investigated and used in numerous fields of medicine. Recently, PRP has received growing attention as a potential therapeutic tool for hair loss. Aims: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of PRP injections in the scalp of patients with androgenetic alopecia. Settings and Design: Prospective cohort study. Materials andMethods: 20 patients, 18 males and 2 females, with androgenetic alopecia were enrolled in the study. PRP was prepared using a single spin method (Regenlab SA). Upon activation, it was injected in the androgen-related areas of scalp. Three treatment sessions were performed with an interval of 21 days and a booster session at 6 months following the onset of therapy. Statistical Analysis: Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 19.0 (IBM, NY, USA). Results: Hair loss reduced and at 3 months it reached normal levels. Hair density reached a peak at 3 months (170.70 ± 37.81, P < 0.001). At 6 months and at 1 year, it was significantly increased, 156.25 ± 37.75 (P < 0.001) and 153.70 ± 39.92 (P < 0.001) respectively, comparing to baseline. Patients were satisfied with a mean result rating of 7.1 on a scale of 1-10. No remarkable adverse effects were noted. Conclusions: Our data suggest that PRP injections may have a positive therapeutic effect on male and female pattern hair loss without remarkable major side effects. Further studies are needed to confirm its efficacy.

3. Platelet-rich plasma for androgenetic alopecia: A review of the literature and proposed treatment protocol

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common hair loss disorder caused by genetic and hormonal factors that are characterized by androgen-related progressive thinning of scalp hair in a defined pattern. By the age of 60 years, 45% of men and 35% of women develop AGA. Currently, U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for AGA include oral finasteride and topical minoxidil. Due to the limited number of effective therapies for AGA, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become an effective alternative treatment. PRP is an autologous concentration of platelets in plasma with numerous growth factors that contribute to hair regeneration. The growth factors contained within the alpha granules of platelets act on stem cells in the bulge area of the hair follicles and stimulate the development of new follicles along with neovascularization. PRP has become a promising treatment modality for AGA. Although there have been several studies previously reported, a standard practice for PRP preparation and administration as well as a method to evaluate results have not been established. This literature review was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of PRP for AGA and discuss the various treatment protocols that have been proposed. Link to the study >>>>> HERE

4. Platelet-Rich Plasma in Androgenic Alopecia: Myth or an Effective Tool

Swapna S Khatu

Abstract

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become a newer method for the treatment of various types of alopecia. In this prospective study, safety, efficacy and feasibility of PRP injections in treating androgenic alopecia were assessed. Eleven patients suffering from hair loss due to androgenic alopecia and not responding to 6 months treatment with minoxidil and finasteride were included in this study. The hair pull test was performed before every treatment session. A total volume of 2-3 cc PRP was injected in the scalp by using an insulin syringe. The treatment was repeated every two weeks, for a total of four times. The outcome was assessed after 3 months by clinical examination, macroscopic photos, hair pull test and patient’s overall satisfaction.

Results:

A significant reduction in hair loss was observed between first and fourth injection. Hair count increased from average number of 71 hair follicular units to 93 hair follicular units. Therefore, average mean gain is 22.09 follicular units per cm2. After the fourth session, the pull test was negative in 9 patients.

Conclusion:

PRP injection is a simple, cost effective and feasible treatment option for androgenic alopecia, with high overall patient satisfaction.

Introduction About the Topic

If you are going bald, i.e. losing your hair, whether as a man or woman, then it has probably dealt your self-confidence a devastating blow. It is no longer news that most people who lose hair have made desperate attempts to regrow their hair using various hair regrowth products. The bad news is that – in many cases, these products do no good.

However, there’s a way out, and that’s through Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections, and Stem Cell Injections. We offer this treatment. As leaders in stem cell therapy and PRP, we offer both treatments at our dermatology Los Angeles County dermatology practice.

What causes hair loss?

The first step to take before treatment is to find out the exact cause of the hair loss. In most cases, hair loss is hereditary. If your family has a history of baldness, then there are chances that you may suffer it also. Hereditary hair loss may also be caused by some sex hormones. Some patients experience hair loss as early as puberty.

Some hair loss conditions may begin with just a halt in hair growth. It can also be triggered by illnesses, traumatic events, or surgeries.

Temporary hair loss may be caused by hormonal changes due to childbirth, pregnancy, and even menopause.

Health conditions that may contribute to hair loss include alopecia areata, disease of the thyroid gland, and infections of the scalp such as ring worm. Lichen planus, and other medical conditions that causes scarring may cause a permanent loss of hair (due to the scarring).

Hair loss may also be caused by strong medications such as those used for the treatment of high blood pressure, cancer, arthritis, heart problems, and cancer.

Significant loss of the hair may also be caused by an emotional or a physical shock. Examples of such types of shock include drastic weight loss, death of a friend or relative, or a very high fever. The hair may also thin when a person is deficient in iron, protein, and other nutrients.

Diagnosing Hair Loss

Persistent hair loss if often an indication of an underlying medical disorder. Dermatologists can diagnose the cause of your hair loss via a physical examination. He or she will also look at your health history, and with this can determine the cause of the hair loss. Some cases of hair loss may be resolved by a simple change in diet, or by prescription medications.

Current Treatment at Other Clinics

Current treatment involves using medications, injection or surgery.  These treatments are considered a patch up of the problem without treating the root cause of the problem.  Medications & injections have many side.  Surgery can be very debilitating with prolong downtime during recovery requiring at times prolonged bed rest for recovery.  It also entails a lot of risk including risk of infection, bleeding, poor surgical outcome to name a few.

For some patients, conventional forms of treatment such as laser light devices, hair regrowth shampoos, and even supplements. While most patients may find Minoxidil sufficient for their hair loss therapy, others do not derive any benefit from it. Oral medications like Propecia have side effects, such as low libido, tenderness of the breast, and a host of complications.

Stem Cell Injections and Platelet Rich Plasma Injections are very effective treatments for hair loss. As a matter of fact, they work effectively, do not require surgery, and there’s no need for creams or daily medications.

We are different from many other clinics who offer stem cell or PRP.   Other may also not offer option of bone marrow derived stem cell, Adipose derived stem cell & umbilical cord stem cell.  They in effect expose patients to more invasive treatments like drilling bones without offering other easier options.  They also may use xray with unnecessary radiation for injections that can be easily avoided in most cases by using ultrasound.  Furthermore, they may not have proper knowledge of how other modalities can enhance the effects of Stem Cells.  These other modalities are used by us to focus on the whole disease and treating different parts of it instead of just treating one out of several diseased structures in the body.

Safe Non Surgical Option

We use a combination of newest cutting edge technology in regenerative medicine to stimulate body’s own repair ability to reverse aging and damage.   We use Stem Cells as part of treatment plan designed by the doctor to treat the body.    These are safe investigational treatments that have shown very promising & safe results in thousands of treatments over the 10-20 years in Europe and USA.   They don’t involve using any medications or drugs.

What Does Stem Cell Therapy Do?

The researchers believe that the therapy works by:

Releasing cytokines into the body to prevent further damage and inflammation.

Preventing inflammation that can make the disease worse.

Creating healthy new tissues or missing or damaged products in body.

Stimulate new blood vessel and nerve formation or activation. Stem Cells shown to awaken tissues in brain in stroke patients.

Stem Cell Treatment For Hair Loss – How It Works

Hair loss is a two-fold process. The first factor that triggers hair loss is reduced blood supply to the air follicles. This is known as ischemia in medical terms. Ischemia may result from genetics, aging, or some autoimmune conditions. The second major factor that contributes to hair loss is inflammation. Inflammation interferes with the growth of the hair follicles, also stopping hair growth.

However, with mesenchymal stem cells, it is possible to regrow all types of cells in the body. As a plus, mesenchymal stem cells have very potent anti-inflammatory properties. Our stem cell treatment is superior because we do not need drilling of bone to obtain the cells. The stem cells are also purified and tested for quality, and are safer, compared to others.

During stem cell treatment for hair loss at our Orange County office, we cultivate embryological stem cells and have them injected into the scalp. This will then cause a regeneration of your hair through a process known as angiogenesis.

Prp Treatments For Hair Loss

Platelets are basically a type of blood cells. They are also known as thrombocytes. Platelets contain growth factors that boosts the body’s healing and rejuvenation processes.

In PRP treatment, we will collect a very small amount of your blood (roughly 25 ccs), and then separate it into its component parts using a centrifuge. The platelets are then separated, creating a concentration known as the platelet rich plasma. The platelet rich plasma has a concentration that is 8 times higher than normal blood.

During the PRP treatment, your concentrated plasma is injected into your scalp. This will stimulate the growth of your hair follicles, causing the growth of more hairs in each follicle.

What makes our facility special?

At our Los Angeles facility, we have invented modern approaches to medical care. Our approach to treatment is second to none. The harvesting process does not involve any form of drilling, and the stem cells are purified and tested for quality before injection. We also employ ultrasound to help in the precise location of high dose stem cells at the required site. These cells will then perform their duty, promoting the formation of new tissues. We are experts in this and has seen positive outcome with our treatments. Our licensed physicians have undergone intense training running into thousands of hours, and so, you can be sure that you are in safe hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does PRP treat hair loss?

There are lots of growth factors in the follicular bulge area. These growth factors interact with cells of the matrix, thus triggering the proliferative phase of hair growth. Stem cells have an ectodermal origin and they give origin to the sebaceous glands and epidermal cells. The dermal papilla cells have a mesenchymal origin. Both cells rely on each other, thus their interaction results in the growth of a follicular unit.

How effective is PRP for hair loss?

There are many advantages tied to the use of PRP for hair loss treatment. Carl Uebel was the first person to prove that PRP increases the follicular unit yield by more than 15 percent – suggesting more than 480 new hair growths per 100cm2 surface area.

Is PRP and Stem cell treatment specific for just a particular gender?

No! It can be done by both genders and works quite well.

How long does a treatment session last?

It takes just about 45 minutes from the time of blood draw till the end of administration.

Does the treatment hurt?

No! The area to be injected will be numbed with an anesthetic prior to the treatment.

How Many Treatments do I need with PRP or Stem Cell for Hair Loss?

Consistency remains the key to achieving best results. Treatment is usually done once in a month for the first 3-4 months. Thereafter it is done every 3-6 months, depending on the response and results from the patient.

Who should not have the PRP treatment?

Patients diagnosed with platelet dysfunctions, bleeding disorders, or liver disease and patients taking anti-coagulation medications or experiencing chronic or acute infections are not candidates for this procedure. Patient who are heavy smokers or drink heavy amounts of alcohol may not see the full benefits of PRP.
