Potential of Stem Cell-Based Therapy for Ischemic Stroke

Ischemic stroke is one of the major health problems worldwide. The only FDA approved anti-thrombotic drug for acute ischemic stroke is the tissue plasminogen activator. Several studies have been devoted to assessing the therapeutic potential of different types of stem cells such as neural stem cells (NSCs), mesenchymal stem cells, embryonic stem cells, and human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived NSCs as treatments for ischemic stroke. The results of these studies are intriguing but many of them have presented conflicting results. Additionally, the mechanism(s) by which engrafted stem/progenitor cells exert their actions are to a large extent unknown. In this review, we will provide a synopsis of different preclinical and clinical studies related to the use of stem cell-based stroke therapy, and explore possible beneficial/detrimental outcomes associated with the use of different types of stem cells. Due to limited/short time window implemented in most of the recorded clinical trials about the use of stem cells as potential therapeutic intervention for stroke, further clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of the intervention in a longer time window after cellular engraftments are still needed. Stem Cell Therapy in Stroke: A Review Literature

Stroke is an important cause of death in the world and disability world-wide especially in developed countries. Following acute phase of stroke, some procedures and medical treatment such as thrombolytic agents has been recommended; nevertheless many patients have enduring deficits. Thus, there is a realistic need to develop treatment strategies for reducing neurological deficits. However, the stem cell (SC) therapy could arrange an alternative intervention for disease modifying therapy. In this article, we present a brief review of different methods of SC therapy in stroke patients and discuss the results with different cell types and routes of administration. Introduction About the Topic

What is a stroke?

A stroke is a medical emergency that is caused by a cessation of blood flow to the brain. When the brain is deprived of blood, its cells start to die. This can result in some very grievous symptom, disability, and in extreme cases, death!

How do i know that i have a stroke? What are the symptoms?

There different types of stroke. These strokes all have similar symptoms because they all affect the flow of blood to the brain. The best way to know what type of stroke you have is to seek medical attention. Imaging tests will then be used to check your brain.

According to the National Stroke Association, the following techniques can help one to identify the warning signs of a stroke:

  • One side of the face droops when the patient smiles
  • Slurring of speech or trouble walking
  • One arm drifts down when the patient raises both arms

There are different kinds of stroke – and many methods of treatment. However, stem cell therapy seems to have more advantages compared to the other forms of treatment. Let’s see how this happens.

Recovery From Stroke

Recovery from a stroke differs for different patients. It may take weeks, months, or even years. While some patients recover fully, others may be disabled for some time. If you’ve had a stroke, it is possible to regain your independence. However, you may encounter some problems such as:

  • Paralysis
  • Inability to form a speech or understand one
  • Depression
  • Problems with bowel and bladder control
  • Strange sensations or numbness
  • Problems with awareness, learning, attention, memory, thinking, and judgment.
  • Trouble with swallowing and chewing

Current treatments available for stroke rehab

A stroke rehabilitation will involve having appointments with physical, occupational, and speech therapists.

  • Speech therapy helps people who have difficulty understanding or even forming a speech.
  • Physical therapy helps with the recovery of movement and coordination skills lost to the stroke. Physical therapy involves the use of exercises.
  • Occupational therapy is focused on the improvement of everyday activities such as drinking, eating, dressing, writing, reading, and bathing.

Therapy and medicine assists with depression and other mental conditions that are associated with a stroke. You may also join a patient support group and this speeds up recovery.

Support from friends and family relieves anxiety and fear following a stroke.

Current Treatment at Other Clinics

Current treatment involves using medications and at times injection.  These treatments are considered a patch up of the problem without treating the root cause of the problem.  Medications & steroids have many side effects including weight gain & increased blood sugar from steroids, damage to kidneys, heart, stroke & gastric ulcer.  Surgery can be very debilitating with prolong downtime during recovery requiring at times prolonged bed rest & even residing in nursing home for recovery.  It also entails a lot of risk including risk of infection, bleeding, poor surgical outcome to name a few.  Stem cells however, reduce the inflammation and pain that are typical of these conditions. Current ongoing research on the effect of stem cells has shown positive results.

We are different from many other clinics who offer stem cell or PRP.   Other may also not offer option of bone marrow derived stem cell, Adipose derived stem cell & umbilical cord stem cell.  They in effect expose patients to more invasive treatments like drilling bones without offering other easier options.  They also may use xray with unnecessary radiation for injections that can be easily avoided in most cases by using ultrasound.  Furthermore, they may not have proper knowledge of how other modalities can enhance the effects of Stem Cells.  These other modalities are used by us to focus on the whole joint and treating different parts of it instead of just treating one out of several diseased structures in the joint.

Safe Non Surgical Option

We use a combination of newest cutting edge technology in regenerative medicine to stimulate body’s own repair ability to reverse aging and damage.   We use Stem Cells as part of treatment plan designed by the doctor to treat the body.    These are safe investigational treatments that have shown very promising & safe results in thousands of treatments over the 10-20 years in Europe and USA.   They don’t involve using any medications or drugs.

What Does Stem Cell Therapy Do?

The researchers believe that the therapy works by:

Releasing cytokines into the body to prevent further damage and inflammation.

Preventing inflammation that can make the disease worse.

Creating healthy new tissues or missing or damaged products in body.

Many patients experience improvements in the treated area and other areas, like in a Mayo Clinic study where patients benefited in both knees after experiencing injections in only one.

How does stem cell therapy help stroke patients?

During stem cell therapy, Stem Cells may be used Intervenes or intrathical to help the stem cells or their signals into the tissue that surrounds the affected region of the brain.  Intrathecal administration is a route of administration for drugs via an injection into the spinal canal, or into the subarachnoid space so that it reaches the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).  This has advantage of being noninvasive instead of injecting cells in the brain directly which involves a more dangerous surgery which we avoid.

As a matter of fact, these stem cells do not just get converted to brain cells. Here is what Gary Steinberg, M.D. has to say about stem cell therapy for stroke patients. Dr. Steinberg gas been the lead researcher on the latest stem cell project:

“…These [stem] cells don’t actually integrate into the brain long term and become neurons to reconstitute circuits.

What they do is to pump out very powerful growth factors, molecules and proteins that enhance native mechanisms of recovery, such as new synapses of neurons that are there, new blood vessels, and they have a very profound effect on modulating the immune system.

And in that way, what we believe they do is to turn the adult brain into a neonatal or infant brain, which has a lot of ability to recover after injury.”

So, stem cell therapy does not mean implanting new cells into the brain, or growing new brain cells.

Rather, it helps turns your brain into a young, cell-regenerating machine.

What makes our facility special?

At our Los Angeles facility, we have invented modern approaches to medical care. Our approach to treatment is second to none. The harvesting process does not involve any form of drilling, and the stem cells are purified and tested for quality before injection. We also employ ultrasound to help in the precise location of high dose stem cells at the required site. These cells will then perform their duty, promoting the formation of new tissues. We are experts in this and has seen positive outcome with our treatments. Our licensed physicians have undergone intense training running into thousands of hours, and so, you can be sure that you are in safe hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to recover from a stroke?

There are different types of stroke. The timeline for recovery is dependent on the severity of the stroke. The recovery process is also prolonged by other factors. In most cases, recovery from stroke takes approximately six months to a year.

Will a stroke patient remains the same after a stroke?

After a person heals from a stroke, the brain changes and doesn’t remain the same as it was prior to the stroke. A former stroke patient can return to his or her normal life depending on the extent of damage that was done to the brain during the stroke. Younger patients tend to recover faster than the older ones.

Can a stroke patient cope with the stroke? Will he or she face some depression?

At the initial stage of recovery, the stroke patient may be very much unaware of the severity of the stroke or its consequences. As the patient heals, he or she gets to understand the consequences and impact of the condition. The patient may have some emotional reactions such as sadness, or depression. He or she may also find it difficult to adjust to the fact that he has a stroke. The emotional reactions from the patient is an indication that he or she has recovered significantly from the condition.

Can a stroke patient drive after a stroke?

In most cases, the stroke patient may not be allowed to drive home after the attack. This is due to the fact that the brain injury causes very slow reflexes, a reduction in memory and attention, poor insight, and problems with vision and perception. Because of these, stroke patients do not have to drive.

What are the major risk factors for stroke?

High blood pressure or hypertension is the major risk factor for stroke. Other risk factors include diabetes, high blood cholesterol, obesity, old age, artery disease, and physical inactivity.

From where do stem cells originate?

Stem cells are present in many tissues and organs. The bone marrow is the richest source of stem cells. However, the most convenient region for harvesting is the umbilical cord.

How are adult stem cells harvested?

The physician draws the stem cells from the umbilical cord. The stem cells and the growth factors will then be concentrated using specially designed equipment. The physician then injects the cells into the destined regions.

What’s the Cost of Stem Cell Injection?

The cost of treatment depends on the procedure performed.  We often offer discounts for returning customers or larger packages of treatment using repeated injections or combining different treatments.  We also offer a price match policy on comparing treatments done by board certified physicians.  We also have interest free payment plan options including care credit for qualifying patients. A limited number of insurance companies and Workers compensation may at times cover some of the expenses.  You may be able to get reimbursed by your insurance for your doctor visits & ultrasound cost. The consultation fee can be deducted from your future procedures, making your consolation free of cost to you.

Book a consultation with our experts to see the type of procedure that is right for you.

When will my results show up?

Stem cell therapy relies on your own regenerative healing to occur. We are all different and so is our healing process. Some patients may begin to see their results within few weeks while others may require some months. The time taken for healing to manifest also depends on the severity of the disease.

What can stem cell therapy potentially treat?

Stem cell therapy is beneficial to a number of conditions such as osteoarthritis, erectile dysfunction, joint pain, renal disease, neurological disorders, autism, cellular rejuvenation, etc.
