Most healthcare professionals consider medications or surgery for the treatment of this disease.
The doctor will begin by prescribing a pill such as potassium para-aminobenzoate or pentoxifylline.
If the prescribed medications do not work, you’ll be given a shot of collagenase (Xiaflex) or verapamil. If it still doesn’t work, then surgery may be considered. In most cases, surgery is considered for men who cannot engage in relationships due to the disease. PRP and Stem Cell Injections are also other alternatives offered by our office.
The major surgical operations are:
- Removal of the plaque and replacement with a tissue graft
- Removal or alteration of the tissue on the side of the organ opposite the plaque which impedes the bending effect of the disease.
However, you should note that surgical operation does not bring a permanent cure to the disease. As a matter of fact, they are not a sure solution.
In some instances, one may decide to go for a prosthesis implant in the organ. This treatment is mainly for men with ED and Peyronie’s disease.

XIAFLEX FOR PD
Xiaflex is a prescription injection medicine for Peyronie’s disease. Specifically, Xiaflex is used when the curve in the organ is greater than 30 degrees and the plaque can be felt.
Xiaflex for the treatment of Peyronie’s disease is only available through the XIAFLEX® Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) Program. This is a restricted program.
You should note that Xiaflex has some side effects. These include:
- Corporal rupture with symptoms such as pain in the organ, blood in the urine or difficulty urinating, a sensation or popping sound in the organ, etc.
- Anaphylaxis and other hypersensitivity reactions. Symptoms include
swollen face, hives, difficulty in breathing, pains in the chest, fainting or dizziness, low blood pressure.
Prior to having a Xiaflex-based treatment, you should inform your healthcare provider if you have any form of allergy, a bleeding disorder, or any other medical condition. Your doctor should know of all your medications whether prescription or non-prescription. Xiaflex may be contraindicated with some medications. You should also inform your health provider if you’re using anticoagulants. You’ll be told when to restart the blood thinner.
