Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Based Therapy for Kidney Disease: A Review of Clinical Evidence

Mesenchymal stem cells form a population of self-renewing, multipotent cells that can be isolated from several tissues. Multiple preclinical studies have demonstrated that the administration of exogenous MSC could prevent renal injury and could promote renal recovery through a series of complex mechanisms, in particular via immunomodulation of the immune system and release of paracrine factors and microvesicles. Due to their therapeutic potentials, MSC are being evaluated as a possible player in treatment of human kidney disease, and an increasing number of clinical trials to assess the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of MSC-based therapy in various kidney diseases have been proposed. In the present review, we will summarize the current knowledge on MSC infusion to treat acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and kidney transplantation. The data obtained from these clinical trials will provide further insight into safety, feasibility, and efficacy of MSC-based therapy in renal pathologies and allow the design of consensus protocol for clinical purpose. Cell-based therapy for kidney disease

The prevalence of renal disease continues to increase worldwide. When normal kidney is injured, the damaged renal tissue undergoes pathological and physiological events that lead to acute and chronic kidney diseases, which frequently progress to end stage renal failure. Current treatment of these renal pathologies includes dialysis, which is incapable of restoring full renal function. To address this issue, cell-based therapy has become a potential therapeutic option to treat renal pathologies. Recent development in cell therapy has demonstrated promising therapeutic outcomes, in terms of restoration of renal structure and function impaired by renal disease. This review focuses on the cell therapy approaches for the treatment of kidney diseases, including various cell sources used, as well recent advances made in preclinical and clinical studies. Introduction About the Topic

Everyone has a kidney. It is a very important organ of the urinary/excretory system. Normally, there are two kidneys in the human body. These kidneys are located towards the lower part of the back. Both kidneys are located on either side of the spine. Kidneys are responsible for the filtration and excretion of toxins. These toxins are sent to the bladder. The bladder then flushes out the toxins as urine.

When kidneys fail in their excretory and filtration function, then one is said to have kidney failure. So many factors contribute to the deterioration, and loss of kidney function. These include:

  • Exposure to toxins and pollutants in the environment
  • Some chronic diseases and acute diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, lupus
  • Trauma to the kidney
  • Severe dehydration.

When the kidney fails in its function, the body becomes loaded with toxins. The end result is a failure of the kidney, which may be very fatal.

How do i know that i have kidney failure?

The following symptoms will be experienced by a person whose kidney has failed. In some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. Possible symptoms of kidney failure include:

  • A reduction in the amount of urine that is produced by the kidneys
  • Swelling of the ankles, legs, and feet. This is caused by retention of fluids due to the inability of the kidney to excrete them.
  • Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
  • Chronic fatigue or drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Pressure or pains in the chest
  • Coma
  • Seizures

What causes kidney failure?

Many conditions can contribute to failure of the kidney. The causative factor also determines the type of kidney failure that an individual suffers. People at high risk of kidney failure usually have any of the following causes:

Poor blood flow to the kidneys

Reduced blood supply to the kidneys or sudden interruption of blood to the kidneys can trigger a failure of this delicate organ. Some factors that may cause poor blood flow to the kidneys include:

  • Heart disease
  • Heart attack
  • Burns
  • Dehydration
  • Allergic reactions
  • Infections (such as sepsis)
  • Liver failure

Anti-inflammatory medications and high blood pressure may also contribute to this disorder.

Issues with elimination of urine

When you are unable to urinate, toxins will build up in your kidneys. Certain kinds of cancer can also interfere with the flow or urine. These include;

  • Colon cancer
  • Cancer of the prostate
  • Bladder cancer
  • Cervical cancer

Other factors that can cause a shortage in blood flow to the kidney include:

  • Enlarged prostate
  • Kidney stones
  • Neural damage (to the nerves that control the bladder)
  • Clots in the urinary tract

Current Treatment at Other Clinics

There is no cure for kidney disease and the only treatments are to slow progression of the disease.

After renal failure there are two major forms of treatment – dialysis and kidney transplant. Dialysis involves the use of a machine to filter the blood and purify it. This machine does the job of the kidney. It should be noted that dialysis is not a cure for kidney. It only helps the kidney to do its job, and may extend your life if done regularly. A kidney transplant is another treatment option. With a kidney transplant, you will no longer require a dialysis.

Safe Non Surgical Option

We use a combination of newest cutting edge technology in regenerative medicine to stimulate body’s own repair ability to reverse aging and damage.   We use Stem Cells as part of treatment plan designed by the doctor to treat the body.    These are safe investigational treatments that have shown very promising & safe results in thousands of treatments over the 10-20 years in Europe and USA.   They don’t involve using any medications or drugs.

What Does Stem Cell Therapy Do?

The researchers believe that the therapy works by:

Releasing cytokines into the body to prevent further damage and inflammation.

Preventing inflammation that can make the disease worse.

Creating healthy new tissues or missing or damaged products in body.

Many patients experience improvements in the treated area and other areas, like in a Mayo Clinic study where patients benefited in both knees after experiencing injections in only one.

What role does stem cell play in the treatment of kidney disease?

Groups of cells around nephrons have ‘stem cell like’ characteristics such as Renal Progenitor Cells (RPC), and another group that has features similar to mesenchymal stem cells, cells typically found in bone marrow.

Stem cell therapy plays a very important role in the treatment of kidney failure. Stem cells are thought to be the body’s natural defense against kidney damage. Found in the bone marrow,  fat cells or umbilical chord,, these stem cells protect the kidneys from injury and accelerate healing. Scientists have identified protein candidates secreted from stem cells aid in kidney repair.

At our facility, stem cell therapy for kidney failure involves injection of mesenchymal stem cells harvested from the embryo (human umbilical cord tissue).

We use stem cells from human umbilical cord tissue (allogenic mesenchymal stem cells). We expand these stem cells at a state-of-the-art laboratory.

The mesenchymal stem cells are derived from umbilical donated after normal, healthy births. The medical history of each mother is screened. Test for infectious diseases is done, and each family gives their consent before donating.

All stem cells derived from umbilical cords are screened for infectious ailments. Screening is done to International Blood Bank Standards prior to usage.

As a matter of fact, a very low percentage of donated umbilical cords scale through this screening process.

Conditions  Potentially Treated:

kidney failure, kidney disease, dialysis, lupus kidney disease stem cell injection, renal disease, renal failure, kidney injury, chronic renal failure, chronic kidney disease, chronic kidney injury .

What makes our facility special?

At our Los Angeles facility, we have invented modern approaches to medical care. Our approach to treatment is second to none. The harvesting process does not involve any form of drilling, and the stem cells are purified and tested for quality before injection. We also employ ultrasound to help in the precise location of high dose stem cells at the required site. These cells will then perform their duty, promoting the formation of new tissues. We are experts in this and has seen positive outcome with our treatments. Our licensed physicians have undergone intense training running into thousands of hours, and so, you can be sure that you are in safe hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is kidney disease?

Kidney disease is a term that describes the inability of the kidney to function at optimum capacity due to damage or injury.

Am I at risk of kidney disease?

Chronic health conditions places one at risk of kidney failure. These conditions include: high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, a family history of kidney failure.

What are the important facts that I need to know about kidney disease?
  • In many cases, there are no signs or symptoms
  • Kidney disease does not resolve on its own
  • The disease can be treated, but the key is early diagnosis.
  • Kidney disease can be checked by blood or urine tests

How can I protect my kidneys?
  • Take preventive measures against diabetes and high blood pressure
  • If you already have these conditions, manage them the right way
  • Go for a test if you notice some symptoms of you believe that you are at risk.

How many mesenchymal stem cell injections do I need for the treatment of nephron failure?

You need about 2-8 infusions of mesenchymal stem cells and renal mesenchymal stem cells

What is the total treatment time required?

There’s an estimate of 2-3 weeks treatment time, though this depends on the severity of the disease. If the disease is at the late stage, then multiple-stage treatment may be required to be effective in dialysis cessation and reversal of kidney disease.

What type of stem cells and delivery methods do you use?

Treatment is done with enhanced mesenchymal stem cells and renal stem cells derived cord tissue derived stem cells. Treatment does not involve surgery and stem cell delivery is guided by a CT scanner (where necessary). It can also be done via an intravenous drip, intrathecal injections, or direct injections (this depends on your needs).

From where do stem cells originate?

Stem cells are present in many tissues and organs. The bone marrow is the richest source of stem cells. However, the most convenient region for harvesting is the umbilical cord.

How are adult stem cells harvested?

The physician draws the stem cells from the umbilical cord. The stem cells and the growth factors will then be concentrated using specially designed equipment. The physician then injects the cells into the destined regions.

What’s the Cost of Stem Cell Injection?

The cost of treatment depends on the procedure performed.  We often offer discounts for returning customers or larger packages of treatment using repeated injections or combining different treatments.  We also offer a price match policy on comparing treatments done by board certified physicians.  We also have interest free payment plan options including care credit for qualifying patients.
