The Difference

Treatments at other Clinics :

"Patch up" treatments like, addicting pain medications, Steroid injection, surgery (many side effects including weight gain & increased blood sugar, damage to kidneys, heart, stroke & gastric ulcer from NSAIDs.)

May not know how to use ultrasound during the injections which is very critical in ensuring a safe & accurate injection. May use xray with unnecessary radiation for injections instead of ultrasound.

PRP & Sonic wave (ESWT) not used to enhance the effects of Stem Cells.

May not offer option of different bone stem cell types. (only offer drilling bones or low quality umbilical stem cells.)

May use poorly trained non-physician assistants to evaluate & perform injections.

Not FDA compliant.

Treatments at Our Clinic :

Treating the root cause of the problem by regenerating and repairing the damaged regions. Good safety profile with body products from own body.

Precision ultrasound guided injection to joints without any radiation to ensure safe delivery of stem cells & PRP to the correct location. (Shown to increase positive results by 20-40% vs. without ultrasound)

Other modalities like PRP & Sonic Wave use to focus on the whole joint and treating different parts of it instead of just treating one out of several diseased structures in the joint.

Several types of stem cell including Adipose (fat), bone marrow and umbilical cord derived options available.

Needle Free Air-Jet Pain pre Injections option.

We perform our procedures at a private Room by Medical Office Towers* in Los Angeles, with easy access to many Hospitals, Ranked in the top 10 USA Hospitals.

For years, we have done thorough research, gathered results data of patients, and gotten reviews from patients, all with a single purpose in mind – to give you adequate information that will allow you make the best decision with regards to treatment of your condition.

1. Hsu WK, et al. "Platelet-rich Plasma in Orthopaedic Applications: Evidence-based Recommendations for Treatment" J Am Acad Orthop Surg December 2013 vol. 21 no. 12 739-748

Autologous plateletrich plasma (PRP) therapies have seen a dramatic increase in breadth and frequency of use for orthopaedic conditions in the past 5 years. Rich in many growth factors that have important implications in healing, PRP can potentially regenerate tissue via multiple mechanisms. Proposed clinical and surgical applications include spinal fusion, chondropathy, knee osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, acute and chronic soft-tissue injuries, enhancement of healing after ligament reconstruction, and muscle strains. However, for many conditions, there is limited reliable clinical evidence to guide the use of PRP. Furthermore, classification systems and identification of differences among products are needed to understand the implications of variability.

2. Hall MP, et al "Platelet-rich Plasma: Current Concepts and Application in Sports Medicine" J Am Acad Orthop Surg, Vol 17, No 10, October 2009, 602-608.

Plateletrich plasma is defined as autologous blood with a concentration of platelets above baseline values. Plateletrich plasma has been used in maxillofacial and plastic surgery since the 1990s; its use in sports medicine is growing given its potential to enhance muscle and tendon healing. In vitro studies suggest that growth factors released by platelets recruit reparative cells and may augment soft-tissue repair. Although minimal clinical evidence is currently available, the use of plateletrich plasma has increased, given its safety as well as the availability of new devices for outpatient preparation and delivery. Its use in surgery to augment rotator cuff and Achilles tendon repair has also been reported. As the marketing of plateletrich plasma increases, orthopaedic surgeons must be informed regarding the available preparation devices and their differences. Many controlled clinical trials are under way, but clinical use should be approached cautiously until high-level clinical evidence supporting plateletrich plasma efficacy is available.

3. Kajikawa Y, Morihara T, Sakamoto H, Matsuda K, Oshima Y, Yoshida A, Nagae M, Arai Y, Kawata M, Kubo T. Platelet-rich plasma enhances the initial mobilization of circulation-derived cells for tendon healing.

Circulation-derived cells play a crucial role in the healing processes of tissue. In early phases of tendon healing processes, circulation-derived cells temporarily exist in the wounded area to initiate the healing process and decrease in number with time. We assumed that a delay of time-dependent decrease in circulation-derived cells could improve the healing of tendons. In this study, we injected platelet-rich plasma (PRP) containing various kinds of growth factors into the wounded area of the patellar tendon, and compared the effects on activation of circulation-derived cells and enhancement of tendon healing with a control group (no PRP injection). To follow the circulation-derived cells, we used a green fluorescent protein (GFP) chimeric rat expressing GFP in the circulating cells and bone marrow cells. In the PRP group, the numbers of GFP-positive cells and heat-shock protein (HSP47; collagen-specific molecular chaperone)-positive cells were significantly higher than in the control group at 3 and 7 days after injury. At the same time, the immunoreactivity for types I and III collagen was higher in the PRP group than in the control group at early phase of tendon healing. These findings suggest that locally injected PRP is useful as an activator of circulation-derived cells for enhancement of the initial tendon healing process.

Review & Testimonials/Case Examples

“I’m 73 yo and have torn meniscus and OA. 3 orthos told me I needed knee replacement. Heard about stem cell and had umbilical stem cells injected then my PRP injected a month later. My knee doesn’t hurt nor buckle any more. It does still get ‘tired’ and a little sore but it’s only been about 6 wks since stem cells. … I still have personal trainers but all exercises are done while I’m seated.”

Bobbi S.

“I am receiving treatment for severe osteoarthritis of right ankle.

I have previously consulted two surgeons and was a considered a candidate for ankle fusion with no cartilage left in my ankle. . My mobility problems was getting severe but ankle fusion was terrifying due to permanent lame condition that would result with a “successful” outcome to control pain.

I have been treated with PRP followed 6 weeks later by autologous stem cells from fatty tissue taken from my mid-riff, then PRP again after another 6 weeks.

5 months after the initial treatment I have improved greatly with regard to pain and functioning of my ankle. I used to walk with difficulty, for limited distances and use a cane. Now I only use a cane if I am going for a very long walk or a hike.”

Introduction About the Topic

Platelet rich plasma is a well-known form of treatment. It has found wide application in a variety of orthopedic conditions. Platelet rich plasma refers to platelets concentrated from your blood. These platelets are laced with growth factors that facilitate the healing of injuries.  Growth factors trigger the healing response in the human body. When platelet rich plasma is injected into the affected area (inured areas), it stimulates the ability of your body to heal and repair tissues.

Platelet rich plasma has been employed in the healing of wounds for many decades. It also helps in stimulation of bone formation during spinal fusion surgery. Of recent, platelet rich plasma has been employed in outpatient settings for the treatment of such conditions as:

  • Patellar tendonitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Rotator cuff tendonitis, and
  • Tennis elbow
  • Joint Osteoarthritis including knee, hip and shoulder Osteoarthritis
  • Meniscus Injury or Tear
  • Ligament Injury or Tear

While some physicians treat almost any condition with PRP, others are more selective. At our facility, we examine your medical history, and your symptoms to be sure whether or not to use PRP therapy.

The Procedure

Platelet rich plasma injections are very easy and can be done at our facility. Basically, the blood is drawn, and then processed in a centrifuge. After spinning in the centrifuge, it is injected into the affected area.

It may be a challenge locating a specialist who can use the platelet rich plasma therapy and that’s why we are here for you at Southern California Beverly Hills. We have well-trained physicians that specialize in the treatment of such injuries.

Obtaining the PRP

Platelet rich plasma is derived from your own blood. The blood is drawn from your vein and then placed into a centrifuge. The centrifuge will be spun at high speed to separate the blood into different fractions. Our specialists will then extract the platelet rich fraction and inject it into the affected area.

Injecting the PRP

Platelet rich plasma injections are administered immediately after the platelets are separated from the spun blood sample. In some cases, calcium chloride or thrombin, both activating factors, may be added to the platelet concentrate.

Depending on your condition and the specialist decision, injection may be done just once, or in a series, spanning several weeks.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) preparation workflow

Taniguchi, Yu et al. “Intra-articular platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for treating knee pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee in the Japanese population: a phase I and IIa clinical trial.” Nagoya journal of medical science vol. 80,1 (2018): 39-51. doi:10.18999/nagjms.80.1.39

Side effects

Side effects of platelet rich plasma therapy are not common. However, the do occur in some cases. There is a risk of infection whenever a needle passes through the skin. However, we ensure that our needles are new and well-sterilized. Another common side effect is slight pain and inflammation after administering the PRP.

Platelet rich plasma injections are contraindicated in people who bleed, or are taking blood thinning medications (such as Coumadin). It is also contraindicated in pregnant women, cancer patients, and patients with an infection.

Current Treatment at Other Clinics

Current treatment of knee involves using medications for pain, steroid injection, knee surgery and physical therapy which can temporary alleviate the pain.   These treatments are considered a patch up of the problem without treating the root cause of the problem.  Medications & steroids have many side effects including weight gain & increased blood sugar from steroids, damage to kidneys, heart, stroke & gastric ulcer from NSAIDs.  Surgery can be very debilitating with prolong downtime during recovery requiring at times prolonged bed rest & even residing in nursing home for recovery.  It also entails a lot of risk including risk of infection, bleeding, poor surgical outcome to name a few.  At many times surgery fails to alleviate the pain.  Stem cells however, reduce the inflammation and pain that are typical of these conditions. They also work to regenerate and repair the damaged regions 2. Current research on the effect of stem cells in pain management has shown positive results.

We are different from many other clinics who offer stem cell or PRP.   Other clinics may not use ultrasound during the injections which is very critical in ensuring a safe & accurate injection.  They may also not offer option of bone marrow derived stem cell, Adipose derived stem cell & umbilical cord stem cell.  They in effect expose patients to more invasive treatments like drilling bones without offering other easier options.  They also may use xray with unnecessary radiation for injections that can be easily avoided in most cases by using ultrasound.  Furthermore, they may not have proper knowledge of how PRP & Sonic wave (ESWT) can enhance the effects of Stem Cells.  These other modalities are used by us to focus on the whole joint and treating different parts of it instead of just treating one out of several diseased structures in the joint.

Safe Non Surgical Option

We use a combination of newest cutting edge technology in regenerative medicine to stimulate body’s own repair ability to reverse aging and damage.   We use a careful combination of Stem Cells, PRP and Sonic Waves (ESWT) as part of treatment plan designed by the doctor to treat the body.    These are safe investigational treatments that have shown very promising & safe results in thousands of treatments over the 10-20 years in Europe and USA.   They don’t involve using any medications or drugs.

What Does ESWT, PRP & Stem Cell Therapy Do?

The researchers believe that the therapy works by:

Releasing cytokines into the body to prevent further damage to cartilage and reduce pain and inflammation.

Preventing inflammation that can make osteoarthritis worse.

Creating healthy new cartilage tissues.

Many patients experience improvements in the treated area and other areas, like in a Mayo Clinic study where patients benefited in both knees after experiencing injections in only one.

What makes our facility special?

At our Los Angeles facility, we have invented modern approaches to orthopedic care. Our approach to treatment is second to none. The harvesting process does not involve any form of drilling, and the stem cells are purified and tested for quality before injection. We also employ ultrasound to help in the precise placement of high dose stem cells at the required site. These cells will then perform their duty, promoting the formation of new tissues. Please note that this process only occurs if the cells have been injected to the exact site. We are experts in this and has seen positive outcome with our treatments. Our licensed physicians have undergone intense training running into thousands of hours, and so, you can be sure that you are in safe hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is platelet rich plasma?

This is a form of regenerative injection therapy that treats injuries in soft tissues

How is platelet rich plasma therapy performed?

Blood will be drawn from a vein in your arm, and then placed in a special centrifuge. The centrifuge then spins the blood, separating the platelets from the other blood components. The effects of the platelets are enhanced by mixing it with a special substrate. The entire mix is then injected into the affected area. After healing, the pain lessens.

What are the musculoskeletal conditions that can be treated with PRP?

PRP can treat shoulder pain, Neck and back pain, knee pain, golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, knee bursitis, hip bursitis, Achilles tendonitis, and chronic ankle pain.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for PRP?

You will have to undergo a consultation before any treatment can begin. During the consultation, the doctor will review your complains and medical history. Diagnostic studies will be done to determine the cause of your symptoms. Once we have established a diagnosis, the treatment options will be listed and you will get to know whether you are a good candidate for PRP or not.

Is PRP painful?

Well, tolerance to pain varies in different individuals. Pain ranges from mild to moderate with PRP injection. We also have needle free air jet reinjection to make the process more tolerable.

How many injections will I need?

There is no specific answer to this. It will determined by your physician and the severity of your condition. Most people benefit from 1-3 treatments.

How long does a PRP session last?

Typically, it takes between 30-45 minutes to complete a PRP session.

How do I Know if PRP is effective?

Unlike other form of treatments, PRP will not mask the pain or symptoms. Rather, you will feel a great difference in your overall function and pain level. Most patients may experience an increase in pain level at the first instance, but as the healing occurs, the symptoms will resolve on their own, usually within 4-6 weeks.

What is the success rate for PRP?

This varies considerably. The success rate depends on many factors namely, the condition that is being treated, the patient’s health status, treatment protocol, and age of the patient. Success also depends on the patient’s perception. Success rates reported in the literature have been largely anecdotal. PRP success in the treatment of tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) has been reported in up to 80-90% in some studies, Achilles tendonitis 70-80% and golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) 60-70%.
