Stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury
Spinal cord injury (SCI), a serious public health issue, most likely occurs in previously healthy young adults. Current therapeutic strategies for SCI includes surgical decompression and pharmacotherapy, however, there is still no gold standard for the treatment of this devastating condition. Inefficiency and adverse effects of standard therapy indicate that novel therapeutic strategies are required. Because of their neuroregenerative and neuroprotective properties, stem cells are a promising tool for the treatment of SCI. Herein, we summarize and discuss the promising therapeutic potential of human embryonic stem cells (hESC), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and ependymal stem/progenitor cells (epSPC) for SCI. Stem cells for spinal cord injuries bearing translational potential
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a highly debilitating neurological disease, which still lacks effective treatment strategies, causing significant financial burden and distress to the affected families. Nevertheless, nanotechnology and regenerative medicine strategies holding promise for the development of novel therapies that would reach from bench to bedside to serve the SCI patients. There has already been significant progress in the field of cell-based therapies, with the clinical application for SCI, currently in phase II of the clinical trial. Stem cells (e.g., induced pluripotent stem cells, fetal stem cells, human embryonic stem cells, and olfactory ensheathing cells) are certainly not to be considered the panacea for neural repair but, especially when combined with rehabilitation or other combinatorial approaches using the help of nanotechnology, they seem to be the source of some of the most promising and clinical translatable cell-based therapies that could help solving impactful problems on neural repair. Introduction About the Topic
What is a spinal cord injury?
Basically a spinal cord injury is an injury or damage to your spinal cord. It is
The spinal cord is a group of nerves protected by the spinal vertebrae. The spine is formed by the stacking of the vertebrae on each other. The spine has a lot of nerves in it. It extends from the base of the brain down to the back, ending close to the anal region.
The spinal cord conveys signals and information from the brain to every part of the body. It also transmits signals and information from the body to the brain. Our ability to perceive pain and move parts of our body is due to the functions of the spinal cord.
If the spinal cord is injured, some of the signals may fail to get transmitted. This results in a loss of sensation (partial or total) and loss of mobility below the part that has been injured. For example, if a person is injured close to the neck, he or she may be paralyzed in throughout a larger part of the body than one in the lower region.
What causes a spinal cord injury?
An injury to the spinal cord may be as a result of a violent event or a sudden and unforeseen accident. The spinal cord may be damaged through the following conditions:
- A gunshot, stabbing, or any other violent act
- Diving into a shallow pool and hitting on the hard bottom
- Falling from a height
- Electrical accidents
- Trauma caused by an automobile accident
- Injuries to the head or spine during sporting activities.
- Extreme twist to the middle part of the torso
How do i know that my spinal cord is injured?
Some of the symptoms that may indicate a spinal injury include:
- Difficulty with walking
- Inability to control the bowels or the bladder
- Inability to move the legs or the arms
- Signs of shock
- Stiffness, pressure, and pain in the neck region or the back
- A numbing or tingling sensation in the extremities
- The head is positioned in an unnatural way.
Current Treatment at Other Clinics
Current therapeutic strategies for SCI includes surgical decompression and pharmacotherapy, however, there is still no gold standard for the treatment of this devastating condition. These treatments are considered a patch up of the problem without treating the root cause of the problem. Medications & steroids have many side effects including weight gain & increased blood sugar from steroids, damage to kidneys, heart, stroke & gastric ulcer. Surgery can be very debilitating with prolong downtime during recovery requiring at times prolonged bed rest & even residing in nursing home for recovery. It also entails a lot of risk including risk of infection, bleeding, poor surgical outcome to name a few. Stem cells however, reduce the inflammation and pain that are typical of these conditions. Current ongoing research on the effect of stem cells has shown positive results.
We are different from many other clinics who offer stem cell or PRP. Other may also not offer option of bone
Safe Non Surgical Option
We use a combination of newest cutting edge technology in regenerative medicine to stimulate body’s own repair ability to reverse aging and damage. We use Stem Cells as part of treatment plan designed by the doctor to treat the body. These are safe investigational treatments that have shown very promising & safe results in thousands of treatments over the 10-20 years in Europe and USA. They don’t involve using any medications or drugs.
What Does Stem Cell Therapy Do?
The researchers believe that the therapy works by:
Releasing cytokines into the body to prevent further damage and inflammation.
Preventing inflammation that can make the disease worse.
Creating healthy new tissues or missing or damaged products in body.
Many patients experience improvements in the treated area and other areas, like in a Mayo Clinic study where patients benefited in both knees after experiencing injections in only one.
Do stem cells have the potential to treat spinal cord injury?
Most treatments for spinal cord injury revolve around occupational therapy, extensive physical therapy, helping the patient to adapt to his or her physical condition, and other forms of rehabilitation.
Many case studies and publications have supported the feasibility of stem cell treatment for spinal cord injury, especially with autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells and allogeneic human umbilical cord tissue-derived stem cells.
These studies have all been referenced by a case report Co-authored by Neil H. Riordan, the founder of the stem cell institute. Health conditions improved by stem cell therapy include increased muscle control, enhanced function, improvement in bowel and bladder function, and improved ASIA scores.
What type of stem cells are recommended for the treatment of spinal cord injury?
We use stem cells from human umbilical cord tissue (allogenic mesenchymal stem cells). We expand these stem cells at a state-of-the-art laboratory and other sources.
The mesenchymal stem cells are derived from umbilical donated after normal, healthy births. The medical history of each mother is screened. Test for infectious diseases is done, and each family gives their consent before donating.
All stem cells derived from umbilical cords are screened for infectious ailments. Screening is done to International Blood Bank Standards prior to usage.
As a matter of fact, a very low percentage of donated umbilical cords scale through this screening process.
What makes our facility special?
At our Los Angeles facility, we have invented modern approaches to medical care. Our approach to treatment is second to none. The harvesting process does not involve any form of drilling, and the stem cells are purified and tested for quality before injection. We also employ ultrasound to help in the precise location of high dose stem cells at the required site. These cells will then perform their duty, promoting the formation of new tissues. We are experts in this and has seen positive outcome with our treatments. Our licensed physicians have undergone intense training running into thousands of hours, and so, you can be sure that you are in safe hands.

A spinal cord injury is an injury or damage to your spinal cord. It is a very complicated condition that may have a significant and lasting trauma on the patient’s life.
What is the classification for spinal cord injury?
Classification is done according to types and levels. Spinal cord injuries are of two types – complete spinal cord injury and incomplete spinal cord injury. In the complete spinal cord injury, it becomes virtually impossible to have any movement below the level of the injury. On the other hand, an incomplete spinal cord injury refers to partial damage to the spinal cord.
Will I be able to walk again after a spinal injury?
This depends on the level of injury. The lower the injury and the higher the sensation, the greater your chances of being mobile again.
Is it possible to have sex after a spinal cord injury?
Every human is a sexual being – whether he or she has a spinal injury or not. Even after a spinal cord injury, one can still continue to have a satisfying sexual experience. However, having this injury implies that your body will respond to sexual desire in a different way. At our facility, we can teach you how your body works, and how you can keep on enjoying your intimacy.
How about bladder and bowel movement?
If you have an incomplete spinal cord
From where do stem cells originate?
Stem cells are present in many tissues and organs. The bone marrow is the richest source of stem cells. However, the most convenient region for harvesting is the umbilical cord.
How are adult stem cells harvested?
The physician draws the stem cells from the umbilical cord. The stem cells and the growth factors will then be concentrated using specially designed equipment. The physician then injects the cells into the destined regions.
What’s the Cost of Stem Cell Injection?
The cost of treatment depends on the procedure performed. We often offer discounts for returning customers or larger packages of treatment using repeated injections or combining different treatments. We also offer a price match policy on comparing treatments done by
